Birdsong lifts Gems in extras to cap off season
Published: Aug. 3, 2018 QUINCY -- The Hannibal Hoots brought in their outfield to prevent the Quincy Gems' Francisco Rodriguez from moving from first base to third on any hit in the bottom of the 10th inning. Cody Birdsong brought him home on a ball that cleared everyone's heads. Birdsong, a Quincy University product, capped off the Gems' Prospect League campaign with a walk-off double to deep center field for an 8-7 victory over the Hoots on Thursday night at QU Stadium. It made up for swinging and missing at two pitches badly earlier in the at-bat. "I was pretty frustrated because those balls were out of the zone," said Birdsong, who hit two home runs and drove in four runs. "I was trying to do a little too much and expanded my zone, which that happens." Read more here |
Lock Down: Monroe City forces four turnovers, wins Class 1 title
Published: Nov. 25, 2017 COLUMBIA, Mo. -- Dawson Shively laid on the Faurot Field turf with the football against his chest. He heard the roar from the Monroe City football fans in the stands along with his teammates who came running over to the Panthers' defensive back. Shively took in the euphoric feeling. "I just laid there and soaked in the moment," Shively said. "I don't even know how long I laid there. Everything just soaked in right then, and I realized I just helped us win a state title." Shively intercepted a pass from Ste. Genevieve Valle quarterback Mason Skaggs with 26 seconds remaining in regulation, sealing Monroe City's 12-7 victory in Saturday's Class 1 state championship. The title is Monroe City's first since 1996 and the third in program history. The top-ranked Panthers (15-0) also avenged last season's 47-14 loss to Penney in championship game. Read more here |
Hicks fires 30 on back nine, finishes with 68
Published: June 20, 2018 QUINCY -- News began buzzing around Westview Golf Course Tuesday afternoon about a ridiculously low score in the first nine holes in the boys 16-17 division of the Pepsi Little People's Golf Championships. Ben Hicks of Minneapolis made a birdie on the par-4 No. 18, his ninth hole of the day, which some believed gave him a 29 on his first nine holes of the two-day tournament. "I wish it was a 29," Hicks said. Hicks' score didn't match the rumor going around the course, but he still carded a 30 that put him in contention for the LPGC division record of 66 set by Taylor Cox from Columbia, Mo., in 2009 and Tim Lavin from Richardson, Texas, in 1986. A run of birdies on the final nine holes could have meant Hicks was challenging the Westview course record of 61 set by Quincy's Luke Guthrie. Read more here |
Sixth-inning collapse ends QND's season in sectional championship game
Published: May 25, 2018 PLEASANT PLAINS, Ill. -- One more out, and the Quincy Notre Dame baseball team was heading to the seventh inning needing just one run to keep its season alive. Two swings of the bat changed that plan. Pleasant Plains' Carter Weiters hit a two-run home run, and Blake Young hit a solo home run on the next pitch -- both with two outs -- to suddenly extend QND's deficit to four runs. An RBI single later in the inning pushed it to five, and the Raiders' season eventually ended in a 6-1 loss in the Class 2A Pleasant Plains Sectional championship Saturday afternoon at Reiser Field. "I missed my spot and left it right down the middle, and the kid just put a good swing on it," QND pitcher Tommy Ray said. "The second one, I don't know, I guess just bad luck. They were really good swings, and Pleasant Plains is a really good team." QND ends its season at 29-3. Pleasant Plains (29-8-1) advances to play Tuscola in Monday's super-sectional at Lincoln Land Community College. Read more here |
